200 Reis Silver coin

The 200 Reis coin was minted under the rule of Jose I, king of Portugal from 1750 to 1777. Jose I ascended to the throne at the age of 35, and quickly gave all power to Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, known today as the Marquis of Pombal. It is said that the history of Joseph’s reign is really that of Pombal himself.
The obverse of the 200 Reis coin shows crowned arms flanked by a vertical value and date, with the legend JOSEPHUS ” I “. The reverse features a Maltese cross and quatrefoil in angles with the legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES.
Mintage figures for the 200 Reis coin are unknown, and the value ranges from $10.00 in VG condition to $100.00 in XF.
