2008 Prince of Wales 60th Birthday Coin

The collectors’ coin has been released by Britain’s Royal Mint ahead of Charles’ 60th birthday on November 14. The gold crown costs 925 pounds ($1,665). The solid silver coin costs 39.95 ($72) and the nickel coin costs 9.95 ($18).

There have been 1,500 of the gold crowns issued, 20,000 of the sterling silver and 500,000 of the cupro-nickel one released.

The coin features the prince on one side and the queen on the other - the 7th coin in the last 300 years to feature two living members of the British royal family - and is framed by the inscription “The Prince of Wales” and “Ich Dien”, which translates as “I Serve”.

Royal Mint officials say the coin is unusual because it features a member of the royal family on each side.

Born at Buckingham Palace on 14 November 1948, Prince Charles Philip Arthur George was the first son of Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen declared her eldest son and heir apparent Prince of Wales in 1958 and in 1969 his Investiture took place at Caernarfon Castle.
