Louis Braille commemorative Silver Dollar coins design images and a prototype of its readable Braille reverse were unveiled by United States Mint Director Ed Moy at the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) annual convention in Dallas, Texas. 400 thousands commemorative silver coins (within that, 25,000 coins are reserved for a special set that will be released later this year) will be issued in 2009 in both proof and uncirculated versions to honor the bicentennial birth and achievements of Louis Braille.

The U.S. Mint is proud to present the 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar coin design. It will be the 1st coin ever minted in the history of our country to contain readable Braille characters,” said Edmund C. Moy.

I am looking forward to presenting the design for this unprecedented coin, and I am pleased that the United States Mint is playing a role in the cause of bringing literacy to all blind and visually impaired Americans.”

2009 Proof Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar

The silver coins feature a portrait of Louis Braille on the obverse designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The reverse design depicts a child reading a Braille book. The word INDEPENDENCE is displayed on a bookshelf behind the child and the word Braille, abbreviated BRL in Braille code, is featured in the upper field. The reverse was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Joseph Menna.

2009 Uncirculated Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar

As Moy said, the coin is the 1st ever in the US to contain readable Braille characters. Three other coins - the Alabama state quarter and 1995 and 1996 Paralympic Silver Dollars - also had Braille, but were too small for the visually impaired to read.

Each coin is struck from 90% silver and 10% copper. The silver content weighs about 0.773 troy oz.

The US Mint also accepts orders at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468).

$10 surcharges from the sale of each coin are paid to the NFB to further its programs to promote Braille literacy.
