The Louis Braille Silver Dollars join the sales tallies this week. The proof and uncirculated coins were launched Thursday, March 26. The first figures show 40,844 Braille coins have sold in less than one week. While they are not exactly instep with the blast-off pace of the Lincoln Silver Dollars, the numbers are solid thus far.

Louis Braille commemorative Silver Dollar coins design images and a prototype of its readable Braille reverse were unveiled by United States Mint Director Ed Moy at the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) annual convention in Dallas, Texas. 400 thousands commemorative silver coins (within that, 25,000 coins are reserved for a special set that will be released later this year) will be issued in 2009 in both proof and uncirculated versions to honor the bicentennial birth and achievements of Louis Braille.
